First Dog.

In the Autumn, when there were mushrooms about, Hamlet would refuse to accompany me on my forays. He simply would not leave his basket.

Usually about half an hour later, when I was semi-lost deep in woodland, he would suddenly turn up, shouting 'I've found you, I've found you'. He'd have a biscuit as a reward, as I told him what a clever boy he was, and we'd carry on as if he'd been with me all the while.

Like most of us Hamlet was a creature of habit, and one of his habits only became known to me after he'd died. Most mornings he would go off by himself, I'd always presumed he was just wandering about visiting friends. In fact I later learned that every morning he would go up the road to my neighbour's farm and steal two newly laid eggs from the chicken house for his breakfast. The strange thing was that they didn't really seem to mind.

Hamlet was always known as Omelet by these neighbours; reasonably apt in the circumstances.

He was a lovely dog. He also used to bite me quite a lot.

  1. Like family, we forgive our pets for their faults because they love us (despite the nibbles) and we love them.

  3. What a clever lad, Hamlet was to have an omelet every morning! My favorite cat bites me quite a bit. Even to the point of twice having hospital treatment while in Tanzania.

    1. Biting me was his way of saying that he was tired of something; playing ball, chasing sticks, or just a quick rough-n-tumble. A small bite, and we finished. I suppose I should have bitten him back.

  4. Lovely! 'My dog' when I was little was Rex, the teenage (in dog years) German Shepherd next door. I used to meet him every day at the fence between our gardens and read to him. They're definitely creatures of habit. He waited each morning in the garden for me for over a year after we moved.

  5. What I can't get over is letting your dogs wander. No dogs go out round here without a lead! When I was little everyone just opened the door and let the dogs out into the street - in fact I saw a video recently where the same happened in a town somewhere in S. America - the dogs formed packs - wandered round the town to their usual haunts then at the end of the day they split up and went home.

Hamlet was adorable - what breed was he?

    1. When I brought him over to France in 1972 it said on his papers that he was a 'chien batard', which is the French way of saying scruffy unidentifiable mutt. I would have called him a black and tan, terrier style, mongrel.

re the dogs going out alone, it's almost pure countryside here. Other than egg scrumping there's not much else to do.

    1. He WAS clever. When out walking on a small road, if a car was to come along (rare) I would tell him to sit, which he did at once, then he would remain sitting until told to come. Occasionally I would forget him, and he would just stay sitting until I was well away from him... then he'd bark to tell me that I'd forgotten something. Clever boy.

  13. He looks rather like a dog my parents had; she was a cross between a jack russell and a border terrier. Both her parents were working dogs owned by a gamekeeper and she was a brilliant ratter and even better at mousing because she'd snap and swallow in one swift move.

    1. I don't remember Hamlet being 'sporty' at all. Maybe he did it in private.
